Haddon Township High School in New Jersey faced a pressing need to renovate their boys’ locker rooms and showers, starting with the outdated and deteriorated flooring. The school district sought a new, long-lasting solution that would offer slip resistance in shower areas, be easy to maintain, and align with school colors in the locker rooms.
The existing VCT flooring was heavily soiled, damaged, and ill-suited for the demands of a high-traffic, moisture-prone environment. Adding to the complexity, relative humidity (RH) testing revealed elevated moisture levels in the concrete slab, posing a significant risk for a new flooring system if not treated properly.
The project began with the removal of the VCT flooring. This required aggressive methods, including jackhammers and tile scrapers. To ensure long-term adhesion, a moisture mitigation layer, Stonfil OP2, was installed to protect the flooring system from osmotic pressure. To meet the school’s performance and aesthetic objectives, Stonhard installed Stontec QBF stain and slip-resistant polyurethane flooring. Seamless and easy to clean for a more hygienic surface, this floor also offers an attractive flake design customized to closely match school colors.
In the shower areas, Stonshield SLT, a textured epoxy system, was recommended for enhanced slip resistance. Shower floors were pitched to drains to prevent water from ponding. Pleased with the outcome, the school district plans to engage Stonhard for updates to additional locker rooms, kitchens, and classrooms.
