Got questions? We've got answers. This FAQ section covers the most common inquiries about auto manufacturing flooring to help you make informed decisions.
Most automobile factory floors start as a concrete slab protected by a resinous flooring system such as epoxy, urethane, or MMA. Bare concrete is porous and wears under forklift traffic, impact, and spills. A seamless resinous system adds the strength, chemical resistance, and cleanability that production areas need.
It depends on the area. Production floors, traffic aisles, and test areas typically need a heavy-duty epoxy mortar like Stonclad GS, which holds up to heavy equipment and constant traffic. Assembly lines benefit from a smooth, self-leveling floor such as Stonlux SL. Laboratories call for a chemical-resistant epoxy mortar like Stonclad GR.
Non-production spaces have different priorities. Reflect gives offices and lobbies a resilient, modern look. Stontec TRF is a slip-resistant, easy-to-clean flake floor for restrooms. Stongard MR provides chemical resistance and easy maintenance in mechanical rooms.
Not exactly. Resinous flooring is the broader category of seamless, poured floor systems. Epoxy flooring is one type within it, alongside urethane and MMA. Each chemistry performs differently, so auto manufacturing facilities often use more than one depending on the area. See resinous flooring types
Most problems come from thin epoxy coatings, which can wear, chip, or delaminate under forklift traffic, dropped parts, and heavy equipment. Heavy-duty epoxy mortar systems are built thicker to resist impact and abrasion. Epoxy also needs proper surface preparation and cure time, so installation should be planned around production schedules.
Vinyl and wood have seams and joints where fluids and debris can collect, and they aren’t built for constant forklift traffic in production areas. Bare concrete is durable but porous, so it absorbs oils and chemicals over time. Seamless resinous systems are designed to resist impact, abrasion, and chemical exposure while staying easy to clean.
Yes. Chemical-resistant resinous systems protect against spills and splashes from acids, alkalis, solvents, and other corrosive materials. Stonlux SL and Stonclad GR are both formulated for chemical resistance in assembly and lab areas.
Yes. Stonhard installs floors with integrated traffic markings in aisles to support safety and workflow. Slip-resistant and textured finishes are also available where spills or wet conditions are a risk.
Areas that handle sensitive electronics may need static control. ESD floors are either static dissipative (1 to 1,000 megohms) or conductive (0.025 to 1 megohm), and they keep static on a person from reaching sensitive equipment.
Timing depends on the system, the size of the area, and the condition of the existing slab. Stonhard considers a fast installation to be two days or fewer, which helps limit production downtime.
Yes. Stonhard has manufactured and installed seamless floors, walls, and linings since 1922, when it began as a patch and repair business for manufacturing facilities. Its single-source model means one company is responsible for both products and installation, with one point of contact from start to finish. Auto industry projects include Clarios and a Cleveland automotive plant.
