Got questions? We've got answers. This FAQ section covers the most common inquiries about chemical industry flooring to help you make informed decisions.
Chemical-resistant flooring is a seamless resinous system, such as epoxy, novolac epoxy, or urethane, that protects concrete from spills and splashes of acids, alkalis, solvents, and other corrosive substances. Because it's poured in place with no joints, chemicals can't seep through seams into the substrate. Stonhard formulates each system for the specific exposures in the area where it's installed.
The right system depends on the chemicals, temperatures, and traffic in each area, so most plants need more than one. Stonhard typically uses Stonchem linings in containment, tank farms, and processing areas, Stonclad GS in building interiors and manufacturing areas, and Stonshield QBT in labs. A Stonhard Territory Manager evaluates each space before recommending a system.
Novolac epoxy is a highly cross-linked epoxy engineered for aggressive chemical exposure, including concentrated sulfuric acid, solvents, and caustics. It's used in tank farms, secondary containment, solvent storage, chemical pits, and splash and spill zones. Stonhard's novolac systems include Stonchem 691, Stonchem 62X, and the Stonchem 600 series.
Epoxy flooring resists many chemicals, but concentrated acids call for a novolac epoxy formulation, which offers enhanced resistance over standard epoxy. The right choice depends on the specific acid, its concentration, and how long it stays on the floor. Stonhard matches the formulation to the actual exposures in each area.
Chemical resistance varies by formulation, so a general-purpose epoxy may not hold up to the acids or solvents in a given area. Areas with extreme temperature swings may be better served by urethane flooring, which is formulated for thermal shock and cycling. Any system can also fail if the concrete isn't properly tested and prepared, which is why Stonhard inspects and preps every substrate before installation.
Containment areas and tank farms need an impermeable lining that stops leaks from penetrating and degrading the concrete. Stonhard's Stonchem lining systems are designed for these areas, as well as trenches, drum storage, and chemical pits. They are built to help facilities meet EPA, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements.
Yes. Stonchem 691 and Stonchem 62X are conductive, spark-proof novolac epoxy coatings that control static while resisting aggressive chemicals. Stonchem 691 uses carbon nanotube technology in its formulation.
Lab floors need to resist chemical spills and stains while staying easy to clean. Stonshield QBT is chemical and stain resistant and can be installed quickly to limit lab downtime.
Stonclad HT withstands forklifts, heavy pallets, and moving equipment without cracking or denting, making it a fit for packaging areas. For loading docks and ramps, Stonclad UR absorbs impact from dropped materials and is slip and weather resistant.
Stonhard has manufactured and installed seamless floor, wall, and lining systems for industrial facilities since 1922. As a single-source provider, Stonhard formulates, manufactures, and installs its own systems, so you work with one point of contact from specification through installation, with service at the local level.
