An industry leader in packaged meats faced serious flooring issues in washdown areas at their 300,000 sq. ft. facility in North Carolina. The facility, built in the early 2000s, was originally outfitted with dairy brick laid over concrete. Over time, the flooring system began to fail — bricks became loose or went missing, grout eroded away, and water pooled in uneven areas.
The company required a floor that would be durable and sanitary, with the ability to withstand low production temperatures. The installation would need to meet a tight deadline within a limited shutdown window. Stonhard Delivers Seamless, Sanitary Urethane Flooring Meeting Tight Deadline
Following removal of the dairy brick, Stonhard began a detailed, multi-step installation process using hand grinders to eliminate remnants of
the brick and mortar and thoroughly prepare the substrate. To restore lost elevation caused by the removal of brick and correct drainage issues, fast-setting Stonset TG6 grout was applied, building back thickness and re-sloping the floor.
Once cured, the surface was prepped and a cant cove was installed to create seamless transitions along walls and curbs. Next, Stonclad UR was installed throughout the area. Stonclad UR is a high-performance urethane flooring system designed to resist thermal shock, impact, and chemical exposure, making it ideal for the demands of food manufacturing environments. The end result was a properly sloped, seamless floor that significantly improved sanitation and maintenance conditions, leading Stonhard to future contracts at the facility.
