Aging Floors Threaten Safety and Performance in Century-Old Firehouse
The Wilkinsburg Fire Station in Pittsburgh, PA, is a round-the-clock firehouse serving the Borough of Wilkinsburg. For five years, the century-old facility had been contending with persistent flooring issues due to its thin coating system that had deteriorated over time.
Approximately 500 sq. ft. of substrate cracks further contributed to the floor's compromised performance. Facility managers decided they needed a long-term solution to improve the integrity and longevity of the floor without pursuing a full substrate replacement.
Stonhard replaced the floor at Wilkinsburg Fire Station with Stonclad GS, a seamless epoxy flooring system that ensures long-lasting durability and easy maintenance.

Stonhard Delivers Long-Term, Seamless Flooring System for 24/7 Fire Station
Stonhard prepared the 4,000 sq. ft. surface with a scarifier and blastrac to remove the failing coating. The key objective for facility managers was to address both functional and aesthetic concerns through a reliable, high-performance flooring solution. Stonproof CT5 was applied as a crack treatment to reinforce cracks. Stonclad GS, an epoxy mortar flooring system, was installed at 1/4” thickness to eliminate future chipping risks.
Finally, Stonkote GS4, an abrasion and chemical-resistant epoxy coating, was applied to increase performance and achieve the desired finish. An additional topcoat of Stonseal SK6 was installed to further enhance UV resistance and long-term surface protection. The completed system met the client’s expectations and since completion, the fire station has contracted Stonhard for work in locker rooms and lobby areas.
