When liquids remain on the floor instead of draining away quickly, aggressive chemicals stay in contact with the flooring system longer, accelerating wear and reducing service life. 

Pooling water also creates unsanitary conditions that can promote microbial growth, particularly in food processing, beverage production, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. In addition, standing liquid increases the likelihood of slips and falls while allowing moisture to penetrate cracks or joints, potentially weakening the concrete substrate over time. 

The importance of proper drainage is reflected in FDA guidance for food processing facilities, which recommends that floors be adequately sloped toward drains, typically 1/4 inch per foot, to prevent puddles from forming and to facilitate cleaning and sanitation. 

Proper drainage minimizes standing water, helping protect floors from chemical attack, reduce slip hazards, and support sanitary processing environments.

The industry standard for wet processing environments is a slope of 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot, directing liquids toward floor drains, trench drains, or sumps. The appropriate pitch depends on factors such as fluid volume, fluid viscosity, equipment layout, and washdown frequency. 

Areas with frequent washdowns, such as meat processing plants, chemical offload areas, or semiconductor subfabs, often require steeper slopes and trench drains to efficiently manage high liquid volumes. Lighter-duty processing areas may perform well with more moderate slopes. 

It's important to understand that flooring systems do not create slope. If a concrete slab was poured flat, installing a resinous floor over it will not improve drainage. Proper pitch must be incorporated into the concrete itself or corrected using a cementitious or polymer slope-correction overlay before the final flooring system is installed. 

A seamless flooring system follows the substrate but doesn't create slope. Proper drainage begins with correctly pitched concrete or a slope-correction overlay.

Effective drainage depends on more than floor slope alone. Drain placement, drain type, and transition details all influence how efficiently liquids leave the work area. 

A properly sloped floor can still experience ponding if drains are poorly located. Likewise, trench drains generally accommodate higher flow volumes than point drains, making them better suited for many wet processing environments. Equally important are the transitions between the floor and the drain. These areas should be seamless, watertight, and chemical resistant to prevent moisture infiltration beneath the flooring system. 

Proper drainage requires more than floor slope. Drain placement and seamless transitions help keep liquids moving and moisture out.

Improper slope and drainage affect far more than the appearance of a facility. Persistent pooling increases maintenance requirements, shortens the lifespan of flooring systems, and may eventually require costly concrete repairs if moisture reaches the substrate.
