Stonhard’s Ultra-Heavy-Duty Layered Flooring System Provides Tipping Floors with Durable, Long-Lasting Solution

Heavy Use Deteriorates Concrete Floor at Waste Facility Operations

The region of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada manages waste for nearly 600,000 people, with the Cambridge waste transfer building serving as a key hub for sorting and diverting materials from landfills. An unprotected 20,000 sq. ft. concrete floor faced constant exposure to contaminants, heavy loader traffic, and repeated impact, leading to severe deterioration. Once operations were affected, a public tender was issued to replace 85% of the concrete and install a heavy-duty chemical- and abrasion-resistant flooring system.

A durable Stonclad UT-AF floor can stand up to constant loader traffic, impact, and chemical exposure to keep critical facilities running.

Stonclad UT-AF Tipping Floor System Restores Waste Transfer Operations Rapidly for Long-Term Results

Stonhard recommended Stonclad UT-AF, a high-performance urethane-urea system enhanced with aluminum oxide for maximum abrasion resistance. As this facility was one of the primary assets for efficient waste management for the region, minimizing downtime was a priority. An advantage of Stonclad UT-AF is it can be installed onto relatively green concrete without the need for secondary moisture suppression primers or extended concrete curing periods. Following the repair of damaged areas and preparation of the surface, Stonhard assigned a 16-man crew with three dedicated project managers to install the floor’s primary layer, finishing in just two days.

Built-In Early Warning System Enhances Floor Protection

Another advantage of Stonclad UT-AF flooring is it consists of multiple layers of contrasting colors to serve as a warning system for damage or wear. Tipping floors experience constant impact and abrasion, and the colors indicate stages when reapplication is needed before damage reaches the concrete. To assure long-lasting durability, aluminum oxide is applied to each layer, providing an extremely hard, durable aggregate with a MOHS hardness of 9 (Diamond being 10). The final layer receives a seal coating for added protection. With Stonclad UT-AF, this waste management facility upholds its top-tier reputation and benefits from a long-lasting, impact- and chemical-resistant floor that ensures efficient, reliable waste management.
