When Horace Mann School, a prestigious preparatory school in New York City, experienced damage to their floors during a renovation project, they sought a replacement solution from a trusted partner. Stonhard had manufactured and installed the flooring for multiple physics labs and corridors throughout the school’s campus. Planners were impressed with the product and workmanship and confident in working with the company again.

Challenges & Requirements
Horace Mann required a flooring system that could withstand the everyday demands of a busy academic setting while contributing to the refreshed appearance of a renovated campus. The ideal solution would provide exceptional durability, wear resistance, and long-term performance in spaces like high-traffic corridors and stairwells. Along with performance goals, planners desired a specific visual aesthetic to align with the school’s renovation goals. Finally, safety was a critical factor in specialized areas such as the school’s pool deck, where enhanced slip resistance would be essential.

Solution
To help the school evaluate its options, Stonhard hosted a Lunch & Learn session that highlighted the benefits and design capabilities of its flooring systems. Through these discussions, Stonhard gained a clear understanding of Horace Mann’s aesthetic vision and performance requirements. Stonhard formulated a custom solution, and at the same time introduced a new product, Stoncrete EFX. This decorative epoxy flooring system has a distinctly modern look that combines the appearance of micro terrazzo with exceptional durability and performance.
The new Stonhard floors offered exactly what planners desired, a long-term solution for corridors and stairwells, with a fresh, seamless, contemporary look. While on-site, Stonhard was also contracted to install a slip-resistant, textured tweed flooring system, Stonshield SLT, for the school’s pool deck.
