Leading California Hospital Modernizes Operating Rooms with Seamless Resinous Flooring
Project Overview
A leading Southern California children’s hospital undertook a renovation project to expand its surgical capacity and support continued growth. As patient demand increased, the facility sought to bring six additional operating rooms back into service through the modernization of approximately 8,000 sq. ft. of surgical space.

Challenges & Requirements
The existing terrazzo flooring had become heavily worn after years of repairs, creating an inconsistent appearance and leaving several operating rooms unavailable for use. The hospital needed a modern, durable flooring solution to support infection control and align with the renovation design.
The project also required retrofitting a new flooring system over the existing terrazzo while accommodating new doors, transitions, and integral cove base details. The design team sought flooring colors that would coordinate with the project’s detailed interior color palette, requiring a customized approach.

Solution
To meet the facility’s performance and design requirements, Stonres RTZ and Stonres STR seamless, urethane flooring systems were installed throughout the operating rooms. Designed for healthcare environments, these acoustic, resilient flooring systems provide durability under rolling loads; impact resistance to protect against sharp, falling instruments; and a comfortable underfoot surface for medical staff who spend long hours standing.
Working closely with the project team, custom colors were created to complement the facility’s intricate design scheme and support the overall aesthetic. An integral cove base, creating a monolithic floor-to-wall transition, was installed to support cleaning and infection control protocols.
