In Memphis, Tennessee, a once-condemned middle school became the foundation for a bold new vision: transforming the long-abandoned building into a mixed-use facility, including an early childhood education center, that would bring vital services and resources to the community. After sitting vacant for 25 years, the structure was reimagined as a modern community campus and educational space. The renovation touched every part of the building, including support areas such as the school’s warming kitchen. In spaces like these, a high-performance flooring system expertly installed can make all the difference, and Stonhard had the right solution.
The decorative flake finish enhances the warming kitchen with a bright, modern appearance.
Renovating a long-abandoned structure presented several substrate related challenges common in aging facilities. Prior to Stonhard’s installation, the general contractor had to rehabilitate and repair sections of deteriorated concrete throughout the area. Close coordination to ensure the substrate was properly prepared and flat would be essential in achieving the flooring system’s long-term performance and seamless, finished appearance. In addition, the flooring solution would need to stand up to continuous daily traffic, have an attractive aesthetic, and provide easy cleaning and maintenance.
Once the rehabilitation was complete, Stonhard installed Stontec ERF in the warming kitchen. This seamless epoxy flake flooring system delivers exactly what a busy food-service space demands. It is durable, slip resistant, and stain resistant, and it cleans easily for simplified maintenance.
