From Apparatus Bays to Locker Rooms: Stonhard Floors Support Nolensville Fire Station

Watch "Why Nolensville Fire Station Chose Durable Stonhard Floors"

Project Overview

A new-build fire station in Nolensville, TN, was in the design phase with a clear operational mandate: provide emergency responders with spaces that balance performance and safety. With firefighters and emergency vehicles moving throughout the facility around the clock, high demands are present on every surface. Those demands make the flooring system a central consideration during construction. Architecture firm TMP knew that specifying the right flooring system at this stage would ensure the finished station would meet the critical performance factors responders rely on every day.

Built to withstand the daily movement of heavy fire engines, Stonclad GS provides impact and abrasion resistance for demanding apparatus bay environments.

A durable, seamless surface helps protect the apparatus bay from oil, road salts, chemicals and heavy traffic while supporting easier maintenance.

Challenges & Requirements

Apparatus bay floors must withstand the daily movement of heavy fire engines as well as impact from equipment and constant foot traffic. The specified floor must also stand up to oil, road salts, and chemicals while providing slip resistance and a bright aesthetic for improved visibility. The Nolensville project also called for attractive, low-maintenance flooring for locker rooms and restrooms that would provide both moisture and slip resistance.

Stontec ERF combines a decorative flake finish with slip and wear resistance to create a durable flooring solution for moisture-prone locker rooms.

Local officials cut the ribbon on the new fire station during a ceremony.

Solution

TMP turned to Stonhard for its record of delivering high-performance flooring with proven performance. Having specified Stonhard floors for multiple projects, the team trusted the products and installation quality for this project.

Stonhard's Stonclad GS troweled epoxy mortar flooring system was selected for the apparatus bays for its superior impact, abrasion, and chemical resistance. Stonkote GS4 epoxy coating was applied over the system to enhance the overall appearance. Stonseal PA7 polyurethane coating completed the system, offering additional protection and color definition throughout the space.

In the locker rooms and restrooms Stontec ERF, a stain-resistant epoxy flake flooring system, provides an attractive aesthetic combined with slip and wear resistance for long-term performance. Its seamless construction creates a hygienic surface while standing up to moisture and continuous daily use. Together, the new flooring systems help to create a safer, cleaner, and more durable environment.

“On this project the flooring -- both in the bays and in the building -- are super important. We use Stonhard on these projects. We specified them on multiple projects and here was especially important in the [fire station apparatus] bays because they can't afford for the floors to fail. We're checking all the boxes with Stonhard products in terms of durability, color options, and slip resistance for safety. We look forward to continue to work with Stonhard." -- Jeff Earwood, Principal, TMP
