Oglebay Good Zoo Reimagines Visitor Arrival Area with One-of-a-Kind Custom Flooring

Project Overview

Oglebay Good Zoo located in Wheeling, West Virginia, undertook a major construction project reimagining the zoo’s arrival area to provide an elevated and more welcoming experience for guests. Their existing ceramic tile required repairs, which prompted planners to seek alternative flooring due to the challenges associated with cleaning and maintenance.

The zoo’s lobby features custom Stontec TRF urethane flooring designed to withstand heavy foot traffic while complementing the space’s inviting atmosphere.

Challenges & Requirements

Zoo planners sought a flooring solution that could withstand heavy foot traffic and daily wear while remaining attractive, stain resistant, and easy to clean and maintain. They also wanted to incorporate a custom design, with 2-foot-6-inch-diameter paw prints integrated directly into the flake system rather than applied as a coating or decal.

Solution

Stonhard installed Stontec TRF, a urethane flake flooring system over the existing ceramic tile. The floor features four custom colors along with custom tiger paw-print designs. Stonhard collaborated with the general contractor, Waller Corporation, to have a metal template fabricated for the paw prints, which allowed the Stontec flake to be applied in the desired pattern and integrated directly into the flooring. Two coats of the polyaspartic urethane Stonseal CA7 followed, providing a UV-resistant, high-gloss finish.

The final floor combines the durability needed for a high-traffic lobby with an attractive, custom finish. The unique flake blend and integrated paw prints bring a lively, animal-inspired touch to the space, creating a welcoming floor that complements the zoo’s playful atmosphere.
