When Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) opened its $100 million headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, it was clear the materials would need to be as distinctive as the brand itself. HOK, the global architecture and design firm behind the project, sought a flooring solution for the high-profile atrium and showroom that would deliver an adventurous, custom look while standing up to the demands of vehicular traffic. For the workshop, labs, restoration area, and other working spaces, the team required durable, high-performance floors that supported PCNA’s sustainability goals.
Customized for Porsche Cars North America, Crush flooring beautifies the atrium and lobby while providing a durable, long-lasting surface.
Stonclad GR met PCNA’s needs for their more functional areas, providing superior impact, abrasion, and chemical resistance.
Stonclad GR is made of 25% recycled glass fillers, making it an environmentally-conscious choice.
The newly constructed building featured a suspended concrete slab that had shifted considerably since it was poured. While common for suspended concrete, the slab showed significant cracking that had to be addressed prior to a flooring installation. Additionally, the substrate had originally been recessed for a tile application, leaving it below the level the finished floor required.
Crush seamless floors make a bold statement while providing protection against wear in this corridor at Porsche Cars North America.
Crush flooring brings a modern edge to this unique space at Porsche North America headquarters.
For the 30,000 sq. ft. atrium and showroom, Stonhard recommended Crush, a high-performance product from its luxury brand, Liquid Elements. Crush is a bold, resinous flooring system that incorporates natural aggregate set in a glossy resin. Stonhard worked closely with HOK to develop a one-of-a-kind version of the floor to match exactly what the customer desired. The result is a floor that reads as an integral part of the space’s state-of-the-art design, a perfect complement to the Porsche brand.
The installation began by preparing the substrate to ensure long-term performance. To manage the slab’s movement, the team applied Stonproof RH7, a flexible, durable sealant used as an isolation membrane to bridge the existing cracks and guard against further cracking. Stonset TG5, a fast-setting epoxy-based grout, filled the recessed slab and built it up to the required height. A second application of Stonproof RH7 followed, adding protection against any future movement.
For the workshop, storage room, labs, customer delivery area, classic car restoration and display area, and car wash, Stonhard installed Stonclad GR, a troweled epoxy mortar system built with 25% recycled glass fillers and a rapidly renewable component, to align with PCNA’s sustainability commitments. Stonclad GR provides superior impact, abrasion, and chemical resistance, performing under the most demanding conditions.
From the showroom to the workshop, Stonhard delivered a tailored flooring solution that supported PCNA’s design vision, performance requirements, and sustainability goals. With every detail from substrate preparation to final finish, Stonhard is committed to providing innovative solutions and exceptional service to create one-of-a-kind results.
“We looked at polished concrete, but it didn’t suit the customer, so we considered a large format tile, but there were concerns about vehicular traffic," said Betsy Nurse, HOK Director of Design, PCNA project. "This led us to specify a seamless product that was new to us. We worked with the vendor to deliver a sexy-looking version of asphalt.”
